The year 2013 blossomed so rapidly and going to end
within hours. January awaited me with my Advanced Level results. I was beaming
with happiness to see the results of a heavily loaded two and a half years. I
received ‘B’ for English literature. After eight years a “B” for English
literature from Jaffna is mine. For me it seemed a life time achievement. We
took Communication & Media Studies for the first time in Northern Province.
We were afraid when we took this challenge because Teachers’ Guide is not
available for Media Studies. We won the challenge and came up with good
results. I got an ‘A’ for Media Studies. The only person to get an ‘A’ in Northern
Province (Just boasting)
A new phenomenon in my life was I received the
opportunity to teach English in my school. I was given grades 10, 11, A/L and a
grade one class consisting of cute little tiny tots. I taught the little ones
Environmental Studies. The experience was entirely different. I specially loved
the little ones. They made my days so special. The innocent hearts always
welcome me with lovely smiles. A special mention should be made about
Tharulalan. He was commonly known as the “Naughty boy” in the entire grade one
classes. Controlling him was the most difficult task for me during those days.
He jumped up and down on the table and chairs. He never brought colour pencils
and always created problems taking other children’s. I do miss them now.
My other classes were grownups. My grade Eleven
students sat for their Ordinary Level Exams and waiting for the results. Hope
2014 will give them good results.
I visited India for the very first time with Amma.
It was a short visit as we stayed there for one week. I was able to visit Anna
University as Amma’s conference took place there. We visited some temples and a
ride all over Chennai. I loved the trip.
“Kathai Sollada Tamizha” a page in facebook provided
me a platform to post my writings. I
started scribbling when I was small. Whenever I sit with my pen I do write
something. I am a bilingual scribbler. Sometimes those writings turn into mad
stories. My writings were known only to me. I joined this particular page in
2012 and started posting my stories. The people in that group welcomed me most
warmly and encouraged me to write giving valuable and effective feedback. The
page turned me into a translator (although not quite up to the mark) too. I
translated two English stories of a writer named Alagu Subramaniam. Even though
I received positive feedback from many people, I learnt that there are a group
of people readily waiting to point their fingers at us and to negatively
criticize us. The translations gave me many lessons and turned me even stronger
than before. All my thanks go to “Kathai Sollada Tamizha”
Write to reconcile - a creative writing project
turned a new page in my life. A selected number of participants were chosen to
participate in this valuable workshop. During the workshops we were taught by
famous Sri Lanka authors Shyam Selvadurai and Nayomi Munaweera. We created two
stories and selected one story and worked it with Shyam. Finally our stories
were published in an anthology in September – 2013. I was fortunate to speak a
few words about my experience at the book launch. The joy I received while seeing
my story in a book can never be expressed in words. Write to reconcile gave me
a recognition as a budding writer. The
joy continued when I was selected as one of the Panelists at a Panel Discussion
organized by the American Centre.
I acted in our senior poetic drama along with my
friends. I started acting in our school dramas when I was nine years old. My
very first role was a “King”. We won places at Provicial and National level.
This time we did Shakespeare’s “A Merchant of Venice”, tenth drama I acted in
my school career. I was given the role Portia. Hope I did my best.
This year too I was given the opportunity to play
violin in our Eastern Orchestra at the Combined Carols 2013.
I was selected for the Leadership Training for
University entrants in November. It was a three weeks programme held in Army
Training School – Maduruoya. It was a new experience. As I was not used to
physical exercises I fell ill. But I somehow managed. I met new friends.
Now I am at the brim of 2013. I thank the almighty
for the love and care showered on me throughout the entire year 2013.
Now a warm
welcome to the forthcoming babe 2014.
